While is no one definition of "contact center and no "counting organization" responsible to take a census, there is no doubt that more and more corporations depend on contact centers. The best estimates report that there are close to 140,000 call centers in the US and Canada, with perhaps 20 to 30,000 more scattered around the world. The 140,000 number is based on anecdotal reports of growth over the last few years. It is an extrapolation from a known figure (the 67,000 call centers that are known to exist using a particular type of technology, and a best guess as to the number that are not), and a decades worth of conversations with people who do count the numbers.
