FastFact: Servicing and selling: two jobs, one agent
Service is defined as determining the needs of the customer and meeting those needs. That is also the definition for sales. The debate is whether one person can do both service and sales. It stems more from the management style than the innate qualities of an individual. The old "sweat shops" that pumped the calls and demanded more and more from the agents were notorious for scaring even the best telemarketers away. The current management style focuses on customers and providing what they need. This means the agents service the customers, which can require some selling. Many contact centers have both an integrated team and a dedicated team. The integrated team sells a product or service when it solves the needs of the caller. The dedicated team talks with customers concerning specific sales promotions or campaigns.
